English

At Corpus Christi, our English program reflects our commitment to nurturing confident, capable and flourishing learners. Informed by contemporary research, including the Science of Reading, we provide explicit, systematic instruction across reading, writing, speaking and listening, supporting every child to grow as a communicator and meaning-maker.

Our approach includes:

  • Structured early reading instruction
  • Little Learners Love Literacy in Foundation
  • UFLI Foundations from Foundation to Year 2
  • Sounds-Write from Years 3–6

Comprehensive literacy development

  • Daily teaching of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, oral language and comprehension
  • Fluency partner reading embedded within literacy sessions to build accuracy, expression and confidence

Assessment and responsive teaching

  • Ongoing formative assessment to guide learning
  • Use of DIBELS and PAT-R to monitor growth and ensure each student is supported to achieve progress

Writing development

  • A consistent whole-school approach supporting sentence construction, text structure, grammar and vocabulary
  • Opportunities for students to plan, draft, revise and publish purposeful texts for authentic audiences

Rich literature and knowledge building

  • Engagement with high-quality fiction and non-fiction texts
  • Development of background knowledge, curiosity and empathy through shared reading experiences

Through this intentional and supportive approach, students develop the skills, confidence and voice to participate fully in learning and community life, becoming thoughtful readers, writers and communicators.
